The West Kirk was founded in 1791 as a secession church, - breaking away from the Established Church over the issue of patronage.  With other congregations of the Relief Church it became part of the United Presbyterian Church and then the United Free Church before re-union with the Church of Scotland in 1929. On 1st April 2026 the West Kirk formed a union with Stewartfield Parish Church to form a new church, EK West Kirk and Stewartfield Parish Church of Scotland. Services will take place in the EK West Kirk and Stewartfield Parish Church of Scotland, Kittoch Street, East Kilbride, G74 4JW.
